(Not so) Mighty Reserves v AFC Fulham

by Polly C

A league game against old familiar (or not so) faces saw us line up as follows:

            Eilis

Yvanna Preeti Marian Amy B

Polly Jess Kat Manda

        Shannon

               MV

Subs: Dani and Al

They came out of the blocks strongly, and as a team we played well in patches, but they had the greater momentum and we shipped 3 goals in the first half, mainly due to our errors and patchy play. However when we did play well, we had some nice passing moves, but those were interspersed with some not so great play.

However our heads didn’t drop, and at halftime we replaced the injured Yvanna with Al, and shifted Jess and Shannon around to defence and midfield, putting Al wide on the left and Manda up front.

Second half we started much better, we plugged the gaps we saw and our midfield held up well. We began to chase the ball less and looked more in control. Tactically we swapped Dani for Manda, and she had an immediate effect on the game, providing a through ball for MV to slot past their keeper. We had them contained for most of the second half, anything coming through was picked up with by the defence and cleared away. However, as a result of a period of sustained pressure from them, we conceded the final goal which was well followed on the rebound by their striker.

So it ended 4-1 to them. There are positives we can take from the game however. We know we can play much better, and as a team we were able to change our formation and style to make the second half much better. As a unit our heads didn’t drop, we fought for everything until the final whistle. Taking these positives into our next games will be a good step for us to help build on the good results we’ve had so far. Onto next week!
