What it looks like

Preparation & routine » How to warm down

How?

“Dynamic stretches are ones that are done on the move, and these are a good way of starting the warm-down, to lower the heart rate. Skipping, side-stepping, ‘opening and closing the gate’, hamstring sweep and simple jogging are examples of this. After the dynamic stretches, do some static stretches on the ground, similar to those used in the warm-up, then go have a hot shower!”

Why?

“Warming down disperses the lactic acid in the body, which prevents stiffness and soreness in the following hours and days. As with warming up, warming down is vitally important to prevent long-term injury to the body, especially if you've played a full 90-minute game. A hot shower (or some prefer icy-cold) is also important at the end of the warm-down.”

Tips & drills

Have a hot shower – or better still, an icy cold shower – after warming down, to help your muscles relax.
